With
the passage of the 18th Amendment on December 18th, 1917, and the closing
of the saloons shortly thereafter, many people began to feel the
"Prohibition Blues." To remedy this situation, organized
crime began to supply a demand that was still a very big part of a growing
society. To combat the legalities came the underground version of
the saloon called the "speakeasy" which harbored politicians,
ministers, policemen and of course city officials. Across the Nation, cities divided
and people took sides. Chicago, a city once glimmering with Industrial
opportunities took on a new shine
that blinded even the most honest
city officials.
