Walking in the shoes of those who lived long ago is imperative if past and present are to meet at the crossroads of our inherit age.  From here, these crossroads become emotional avenues that enable past and present to assimilate into a single identity that becomes a mirroring reflection of oneself.  It is at this point that oneself can fully understand the implications of past decisions and the moral obligations expected  for future decisions.  The crossroads where past and present meet never give definitive directions as to which way to go when considering ones future.   Looking back toward the past or focusing ahead toward the future can give glimpses if one believes that the past and present are intertwined and learning comes as a result.  True direction is given when emotional attributes from the past dictate historical relevance for present and future.  It is this conclusion that has made Role Play such an important part of my classroom experience.  History inevitably binds us to our future.  This cannot be disputed.  Choices made today reflect on past choices made.  You either learned from the past and make better choices or you do not learn from the past and make the same mistakes.  Enter the emotional bond that ties past and present together (like our ancestors, we all have cried, laughed, been angry, been fearful) and one can fully understand the pain that destructive choices have had on those who have lived in the past.  This emotional bond is what ties past, present and future together forever.  After all, we are ALL historical beings.  Tomorrow is gone, it has been written into history and YOU were a part of it!
